Advanced Placement Psychology Welcome Letter and Summer Assignment

17-18

Instructor: Ms. McLendon

[email protected]

Welcome to AP Psychology!  Advanced Placement courses help prepare students for the rigor of college through advanced study and skills acquisition techniques. An AP Psychology course helps to further social studies by providing students with an opportunity to explore social sciences beyond history and civics. This class will be rigorous and challenging, as one of the goals of an AP class is to prepare you for the AP exam that will take place in April/May 2017.  The purpose of this letter is to give you a further understanding of the class. You are required to have the assignments completed so you will be ready to go on August 10th.

In AP Psychology, as is the case in all AP courses, the aim is to provide a learning experience equivalent to that obtained in most college introductory psychology courses. What this means is you will be required to complete outside reading assignments, complete assignments that complement the reading, write essays and papers, complete projects, maintain an organized and effective binder, attend class on a daily basis and actively participate in team based learning platforms. Many of the reading assignments are lengthy, projects/papers will receive minimal in class preparation time, and lack of outside preparation on your part will hurt you. Ultimately, your success depends on your actions.  If you come to class prepared with the assignments read and completed, your chances of success will increase. If you have taken this course for reasons other than to be in a challenging course that will potentially yield college credit, I urge you to rethink your options before we get too far into the course.

In order to provide you with a solid foundation for success in this course (who wants a 5 on that AP exam?) and to discover the great diversity of this field, you are to encouraged to read an introductory text, " Forty Studies That Changed Psychology, "by Roger R. Hock.   The historical studies discussed in this text continue to be cited, stirred up controversy when first published, directed new research, and changed our understanding of human behavior.  In addition, this is information that appears most frequently on the AP Psychology Exam, thus, early preparation can only lead you one step further toward success. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me directly at [email protected]. I am looking forward to an enriching and successful school year! J

Sincerely,

Candace McLendon, Instructor

Summer Assignment Tasks

______ Task #1: Sign up for text and/or email notifications on remind.

Text @apsych1718 to the number 81010. You will receive a welcome text from Remind. This is how I will communicate class updates.

______ Task #2: Familiarize yourself with the College Board website for this course:

              https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/apcourse/ap-psychology?phych .

Download and read the course overview and course description. Look over the career fields and college majors related to Psychology. Also, look over the AP Credit Policies for your prospective colleges. We will be going over this information throughout the course so it is good for you to know how this course will benefit your future college and career path.

______ Task #3 : Summer Reading (optional head start assignment): “Forty Studies that Changed Psychology” 6th Edition (or newer),

             New Jersey, Prentice Hall.

You may read the passages from this book in one of two ways:

1. Download the free pdf files on my lhsyellowjackets.com page website

2. For those with limited Internet services, you may purchase it on your own or borrow a copy at the beginning of the school year. I have a limited number of copies of the book.  Keep in mind you will have less time to read if you wait until school begins. First come first serve basis.

Throughout the year, I will go back to this text and a assign a homework summary of the content, using the guided questions below:

  1. Summarize the theoretical propositions of this study. (What aspect of human behavior were they interested in? What questions were they trying to answer?):
  2. Describe the methods of study (Summarize how they conducted their research):
  3. Summarize the results of the experiment (Did the researchers find what they expected? Explain.):
  4. Summarize the “Discussion.” (What was the significance of the study? Be sure to include any criticisms directed toward the research.):
  5. What subsequent research has been done in this area? Describe any recent applications of this study.
  6. Personal Reaction. What did you learn? Were you surprised by the results? How do these findings fit into what you already know? Did this study challenge any of your previous beliefs? Be specific and explain your feelings in detail.

If you have any questions about these requirements, please contact me as soon as possible. Let’s have a great year!

Leesburg High School

Biology I

course description

The purpose of this course is to expose students to the biological sciences through active engagement, exploration, experiments, and experiences. This will give the student a better understanding of the importance of biological sciences in our world and the difference he/she can make in the future. The emphasis of this course is placed on understanding systems and processes, and you will be tested on your comprehension of these larger concepts.  You will be asked to integrate information from a number of contexts into a reasoned analysis, similar to a scientist’s approach of devising and implementing solutions to real-world problems. This is an introductory course covering many different disciplines in biology ranging from ecology and evolution to microbiology and biochemistry.

Assessments

This is a rigorous high school course that requires students to have a strong work ethic and discipline to study daily, take notes, participate and cooperate in the classroom. All students will be assessed at the end of the year through a Florida State Assessment Tool: EOC Biology Exam. Students must pass this test in order to receive credit. In order to prepare you for the exam, you will be given informal and formal assessments, including unit tests, quizzes, and projects throughout the course, and your progress will be monitored.

Class Participation/Discussion

Inquiry is the basis of Science, and you must be an active participant in class discussions and activities. This includes bellringers, group cooperative strategies, comprehension checks, and learning scales/exit slips. Rating your own academic progress allows me to better understand your strengths and weaknesses in learning the topics we discuss.

Homework

Homework is given essentially every night, and may include reading text, lab reports, projects, and assignments. You are responsible for keeping work organized in your biology notebook and turning in as requested for grading.

Projects /Presentations

This is a cooperative learning environment, and you will be expected to work both individually and in a group setting to accomplish tasks such as assessments, projects and presentations. Though there may be time in class to work on these activities, the majority of the preparation will be done out of class with substantial time to complete. USE YOUR TIME WISELY.

Laboratory Exercises

In Biology, it is crucial to have practical “hands on” experiences in order to come to an understanding of the natural world and the forces that affect it.  An average of one period per week is devoted to hands-on laboratory experiences or fieldwork. Proper attire must be worn on lab days, and students must wear CLOSED TOED shoes, pull hair back, and refrain from wearing loose articles or jewelry. You must be present on lab day to complete lab in order to receive full credit, as they are often impossible to make up and cannot be exempt. Safety goggles, aprons, and gloves will be provided for you and must be worn during lab. **Please note: Each group member is responsible for turning in a lab report individually, so please make sure exchange data with your group partners**

Materials (Required)

    • 3-ring binder with pockets (specifically for this class) – This will keep your interactive notebook and documents
    • Spiral notebook-70 page (1 per 9 weeks) required to record daily bellringer responses, learning goals, comprehension checks, foldables, and notes. Keeping an organized notebook will be a heavily weighted component of this class.) Index dividers / Sheet protectors are encouraged to maintain organization of notebook
Lab Notebook ( graph paper composition book)
  • Pencil/Pens- Only blue or black ink please. Please bring more than one SHARPENED pencil to class.
  • Loose leaf paper- for general use, classwork/homework, and lab reports that do not need to be typed.
  • Glue sticks, colored pencils, highlighter, markers, colored paper (for diagrams/projects that make up your interactive notebook)

Please be advised that any student who is consistently coming to class without basic supplies to do work will be subject to disciplinary action. If a student is in need, please contact the family school liason, Ms. Nathanson, or myself so we can help. Class supplies are limited with approximately 120-150 using them. I encourage everyone to have their own as much as possible.

Academic Integrity

I expect complete honesty and integrity from each student.  There will be occasions when you will be allowed to share information with other students, and I will tell you this clearly in advance.  While you may work together on certain assignments, you are not allowed to copy another student’s work.  Students that copy work and students that allow their work to be copied are both at fault.  Both parties will receive a zero.  Please see your code of conduct for a more complete discussion of the honor code of the school.

One common method of plagiarism is failure to cite sources or information. You will be given information on how to successfully cite sources. (google and Wikipedia are NOT proper cited sources)

Absences

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get what you missed the day you return.  You have FIVE (5) days to make up missing work on your OWN time after school during tutoring hours Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday. Please make arrangements in advance so I can be sure to be in classroom at that time. Assignment information and calendar will be posted on website.

The expectation is that you are here for all announced exams/quizzes.  If you are EXCUSED from being absent the day of a quiz or exam, be prepared to make it up after school the day you return.  Be aware that the exam you will be taking when you get may not be the same one that was given on the regular exam day.  An UNEXCUSED absence the day of an exam will result in a score of zero. Bring notes to attendance to mark.

Lab reports and projects must be turned in on the due date even if you are absent.  These types of assignments are generally completed in an electronic format (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, etc.) and therefore can easily be e-mailed to me, or turned in early. If there are extenuating circumstances, make sure that I am aware through either a written note or an e-mail from a parent or guardian.  I am willing to work with you if you have a problem but will not excuse procrastination.

Welcome! I am a born and raised Floridan, and I've lived in numerous areas of Central Florida.I grew up in Brevard county, moved to the Orlando area for college, and now I am enjoying my time as a Lake County resident.

I graduated from the University of Central Florida with my undergraduate degree in Athletic Training. While working medical was something that I always wanted and loved to do, I found myself loving the teaching aspect more and more. I made the switch to a full time teacher and I could not be happier! I got my Masters degree in Special Education in 2014.

With my family being from the Virginia area, I grew up a diehard Redskins fan. As a true fan I'm weathering the ups and downs of my team. I also am a season ticket holder for my UCF knights, and spend many fall Saturdays at the games. Outside of football, hockey is my other sporting love. I am a Washington Capital fan, and cheer my team on from afar.

I am so excited for all the fun and challenges this year will bring, and I have amazing students. At any time during the school year if I can be of assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me. Go Jackets!

Go Jackets!

Yellow Jacket Nation,

"The depth of commitment, the quality of service, and the devotion to excellence" are the characteristics that an effective learning commuity must possess in order to equip students with the necessary skills to reach their greatest potiential. I am excited about the opportunity to work with the Leesburg High School Community to cultivate the learning platform.

I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree from Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University, Tallahassee, FL and Masters in Educational Leadership from National Louis University, Wheeling, IL. I have several years of experience in education in Florida and North Carolina at elementary, middle and high school levels.

My Educational Aspiration, "Students will experience their classrooms as invigorating, even inspiring environments..places they look forward to going to and places they hate to leave. It is our dream that they will come to know themselves as masters of various crafts..It is our desire that they will come to love the process of learning itself by making it their own." (Paideleria)
